The short answer

The easiest collage ideas start with how many photos you have. Four vertical phone photos fill a square, a portrait post, a Story and a phone wallpaper better than almost any other count, at 88% to 94% of the canvas. Pick an idea below, open it, and swap in your own photos. Every idea here is a working template in Collage Maker, free and with no watermark.

How many photos should a collage have?

We ran vertical phone photos through the layout code this site uses, with Best fit and default spacing, and measured how much of the canvas the photos fill with nothing cropped. Calculated November 5, 2026.

PhotosSquarePortrait 4:5Story 9:16Phone wallpaper
262.0%49.6%64.0%78.6%
382.6%66.3%85.4%87.2%
492.9%88.4%94.1%93.9%
680.6%87.9%84.2%85.8%
989.9%86.7%91.8%84.1%
1288.4%89.3%90.6%91.8%

Two things stand out. Four is the most dependable count, at 88% or more on all four shapes. Two vertical photos look sparse in a square or a 4:5 post, since 38% to 50% of the canvas stays empty, so use a tall shape for a pair or choose Fill frame.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good collage ideas for beginners?

Start with four photos in a square. In our calculation, four vertical photos fill 92.9% of a square with nothing cropped, so it looks full without any adjusting. A month in four photos is an easy first subject.

How many pictures do you need for a collage?

Two is enough, and four is the most dependable count. A collage here takes up to 30 photos, though a 9:16 Story reads best with 12 or fewer.

What can I make a photo collage about?

A trip, a birthday, a child’s first year, an anniversary, a single day or one color around your town. The ideas above each come with a layout you can open.

What makes a collage look good?

One large photo to anchor it, photos that share a color or a subject, and enough spacing to let them breathe. Choose photos that say different things, since six similar views read as one.

Are these collage ideas free to use?

Yes. Every idea opens in Collage Maker, which is free, with no account, no watermark and nothing to buy.
